He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with highest Honors and Distinction in 1989, then received his Doctor of Medicine with Honors from the same University in 1993. During his training, he was a member of: Phi Beta Kappa (a National Honor Society), Phi Eta Sigma (a Freshman Honor Society), Phi Lambda Upsilon (an Honorary Chemistry Society), Alpha Epsilon Delta (a Premedical Honor Society), and the Outstanding College Students of America. He was on the Dean's List for seven semesters. He also received the Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award, the American Institute of Chemists Award, the Alumni Loyalty Award, and the Merit Award of 1992. He completed an Internship in Anesthesiology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, then completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
