He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He received his Medical Degree with Distinction from the University of Michigan. He performed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina in 1986 and was a chief medical resident for the UNC system in 1987. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is an associated Clinical Professor for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is also involved in clinical research. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Herring and his wife, Pilar, reside in Wilmington with their children Eric, Benjamin and Joaquin. He also has two children from his first marriage, Andy, who is an officer in the United States Army, and Mark, who will be graduating from Mercersburg Academy and attending college.
