Dr. Musselwhite is a third-generation son of Wilmington. He received a degree in Pharmacy in 1966 from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and his M.D. Degree in 1975 from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University, and residency training at New Hanover Memorial Hospital in Wilmington. He was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1988.

Dr. Musselwhite, his wife, Deborah, and his children, Julia, Leslie, Sheri and Whit, and her children, Brandon and Taylor, live in Wilmington.
